A New Paradigm For Working With Prenatal Women

With Ash Berry and Kimi Broadbent

Off the back of their highly successful (and sold out!) workshop for the PAA conference last year, Ash and Kimi and presenting their workshop again for the wider Pilates community.

You can attend in person, live-stream it, or access a recording of either workshop.

Attending in-person at the workshops will qualify for 1 PDP per hour; attending online/retrospectively will qualify for 0.5 PDP per hour.

How confident do you feel when taking on a new pregnant client into your classes? The National guidelines for pregnancy and exercise give us very general advice that can leave us short on fully understanding the complexities of the pregnant body and how it should be managed. On the other hand, the conservative clinical style approach can sometimes leave very capable pregnant women feeling wrapped in cotton wool unnecessarily.

This workshop dissects world guidelines, cross examines them with current research in the woman’s health field and suggests a new paradigm for working with prenatal women in Pilates. We will explore the power of language and somatic techniques before considering an assessment tool to use each session. Finally participants will explore relevant anatomy, learn how baby’s position can affect programming and explore new repertoire to assist in balancing the pregnant pelvis , finding space for baby and supporting well-being in Mama.

Ash Berry and Kimi Broadbent were fortunate enough to share their pregnancy journey with each other through 2021 and their little girls were born 6 weeks apart. Their pregnancy journeys were not easy and their experience caused them to throw some recommendations and well- known practices for prenatal exercise out the window. This workshop will explore a new way of considering women in this special time of life and include a practical component combining Kimi and Ash’s go to prenatal exercises on the studio apparatus and in the reformer group class room.

In this workshop, participants will:

  • Dissect the current world guidelines for exercise and pregnancy

  • See the latest research within the Pilates and Women’s Health Field

  • Explore the power of language when communicating with prenatal women

  • Learn somatic techniques to guide your clients experience

  • Receive our pregnancy assessment tool to use in studio or group environments to keep your clients safe and make sure training is appropriate

  • Dive into relevant pregnancy anatomy

  • Understand how baby’s position in the womb can affect programming

  • Practice new repertoire across reformer and studio apparatus to assist in balancing the pregnant pelvis, finding space for baby and supporting well-being in prenatal clients
